What We Do

“Design is not just about creating solutions; it’s about understanding the relationships and context that give rise to the problem. A design-led approach thrives when empathy leads the process, forging connections between people, systems, and outcomes to shape meaningful change.”
Erika Hall, Expert on Relational Design

Our Services

At Root and Branch Collective, we use Human-Centred Design (HCD) to help organisations find the right problems to solve and develop solutions that truly serve.

Working at the intersection of strategy, design, and behavioural insight, we help organisations build services that are not only effective but sustainable, inclusive, and rooted in lived experience.

We offer a range of services to support organisations wherever they are in their journey: from early inspiration to long-term transformation.

  • We deliver thought-provoking, evidence-based talks on design thinking, behavioural insights, and healthcare innovation.

Whether for leadership teams, public events, or internal away days, our talks are tailored to challenge assumptions, spark new ways of thinking, and inspire practical change.

Talks have been delivered in the private sector and public sector, including the Royal Society of Physiotherapists and various NHS trusts.

    Popular topics include:

    • Introduction to Human-Centred Design

    • Co-design in Complex Systems

    • The Future of Innovation in Health & Care

    • Behavioural Science Meets Service Design

  • Need a catalyst for innovation? Our standalone workshops introduce teams to practical design tools while tackling real challenges.

    These sessions are ideal for:

    • Kick-starting internal projects

    • Bringing together cross-functional teams

    • Aligning around user needs and strategic priorities

    Example workshops:

    • Wicked Problem Mapping

    • Stakeholder Mapping

    • Journey & Emotional Mapping

    • Inclusive Design 101

Workshops can be delivered online or in person, and are usually half a day.

  • Our Human-Centred Design Workshop Series is a structured programme that helps teams embed design-led thinking into strategy and delivery.

Each session builds on the last to take teams from complexity to clarity, creating actionable tools and insights that can be applied immediately.

    The core series includes:

    • Workshop 1: Human-Centred Design & Wicked Problem Mapping
Understand the design process and define the right problem to solve.

    • Workshop 2: Stakeholder Mapping
Identify the people who matter and how to engage them.

    • Workshop 3: User Journey & Emotional Mapping
Explore user experience and uncover opportunities for meaningful change.

    • Final Output: Innovation Roadmap & Toolkit
A practical synthesis of learnings and next steps, tailored to your context.

Workshops are designed to be delivered in person or as a blended series. We recommend Workshop 2 be held in person where possible.

  • For organisations looking to go deeper, we provide longer-term strategic support, embedding design thinking within teams, projects, and systems.

    This might include:

    • Co-designing services or digital tools

    • Supporting transformation programmes

    • Developing inclusive design strategies

    • Aligning policy, practice, and user needs

We work closely with clients to shape the right level of support always aiming to build internal capability as well as external impact.

Why Human-Centred Design?

Human-Centred Design (HCD) is not just a creative approach—it’s a strategic tool for navigating complexity.

Grounded in behavioural science and systems thinking, HCD helps teams design with users, not just for them. The result? Services that are more inclusive, usable, and impactful—especially in high-stakes environments like health and social care.
