Behavioural Science in Healthcare Innovation

Healthcare is fundamentally about behaviour. Every interaction within a health system depends on decisions made by patients, clinicians, carers and organisations. Whether encouraging someone to attend an appointment, supporting medication adherence or introducing a new digital platform, success depends on understanding how people think, decide and act.

Behavioural science provides evidence-based methods for understanding these decisions. Rather than assuming people always make rational choices, it recognises that behaviour is influenced by habits, emotions, cognitive load, social environments and organisational culture.

This perspective is increasingly important in healthcare innovation. Many digital products fail not because they lack technical capability, but because they overlook the realities of human behaviour. If a system adds unnecessary complexity, interrupts clinical workflows or fails to consider patient motivation, adoption is likely to remain low regardless of its technical quality.

At Root & Branch, behavioural science is integrated throughout our work. Combined with healthcare design, systems thinking and clinical expertise, it helps us develop products and services that are easier to adopt, more intuitive to use and better aligned with how people experience healthcare in the real world.
